I am basically obsessed with the writing of Nigerian author, Atinuke. Her characters, Anna Hibscus, Beti and Tola are everything. When my daughter was very small and over the years since as I have taught other young children equally enamored with story, I have needed, NEEDED, gentle but real chapter books. It was especially difficult to find representation of girls and even more so of BIPOC girls. But Atinuke’s work is not just filling the need for representation. She is doing so much more. No matter how many times I read aloud these books or listen to them on audio, I myself find so much joy. They are good good stories for the gentle-hearted.

Anna Hibiscus was my entry way to Atinuke. There are so many beautiful things in these books from multi-generational, communal households with shared work to stories of socio-economic injustice shared in a way that a four year old can walk away understanding but not over burdened. Anna Hibiscus shares stories of cultural differences that truthtell and hold all with care. And they are funny! So funny!

Too Small Tola was the next series I found years later. These have become wonderful first chapter books for some children I work with. The stories are entertaining, connected to the real world while holding onto a sweetness of childhood. How does Atinuke do this even while keeping it so real!? She’s good.

I can hardly compare these books because I love them all so deeply but I have saved Beti and the Little Round House for last because it is a story to be treasured. Beti lives an off grid life with her little family, Mam and Tad, Baby Jax and Naughty the goat and a whole community of animals and neighbors. Her adventures even while the sweetest ever hold you on the edge of your seat. And I can hardly talk to you about Beti without mentioning the georgeous illustrations of Emily Hughes. They are fanciful and romantic and if you are anything like me will have you ready to start a homestead with your besties. I read this book aloud most years and I will tell you there are not many read alouds that hold the attention of end-of-day-tired five to seven year olds. Beti does this magic, though.

Atinuke is my all time favorite writer of early chapter books and read aloud chapter books for young children. So much gratitude for this author, I knew I wanted to give her an early shout out here on the Literate Wild!

Do you know similar authors who hold this special space for young children? Tell me about it!
