Part 3 Cosmic Wonder
This list is part of a series on books for magical families. Part 1, a little bit of witchery, lists all the best witch books for kids! Part 2, wild & sacred, lists my favorite nature goddess books.
This list is here to give you books that connect us to the universe. The list hooks up to the feeling of awe and oneness. Let’s go!
Little Night — Yuyi Morales, 2007
I am a huge fan of Yuyi Marales. Her book, Little Night, brings all the wonder of the starry sky into sacred story and named Mother Sky and Little Night as big characters in the ever repeating celestial narrative.
Hello Sacred Life — Kim Krans, 2022
This little board book is a favorite that I keep around for all ages. The simple text reminds me how little language moves can make big impressions. Naming as sacred the moon and stars and world, mmmmmmmm, yeah.
A Big Mooncake for Little Star — Grace Lin, 2018
I love Grace Lin! This sweet story catches the attention of young people when I read it. They are hanging on to each line, each page turn to see what happens as Little Star eats up the Mooncake bit by bit. I love the folklore, the bit of trickster, and the way the moon and stars are storied in this book.
I Wonder — Annaka Harris and John Rowe, 2013
It’s cool how this book is a slow conversation with an adult and child. The adult doesn’t have all of the answers and steps into wonder alongside the child.
I Sang You Down from the Stars — Tasha Spillett-Sumner and Michaela Goade, 2021
Oh this book has my heart. Tasha Spillett-Sumner describes so many things about my understandings of motherhood. She describes how her baby chose her and how in pregnancy and birthing she became a pathway for this soul to come from the stars to earth. And Michaela Goade makes it all as magical on the page as it is in life.
You Are Stardust — Elin Kelsey and Soyeon Kim, 2012
The beginning of the book says, “You are stardust. Every tiny atom in your body came from a star that exploded long before you were born.” This book has a mix of science and mystical language that I dig.
